In Russia, May 9th is Victory Day. It commemorates the Allied victory over Nazi Germany and the surrender of German forces in May 1945.
Known as "The Great Patriotic War" (1941 to 1945) in the nations of the former Soviet Union, May 9 celebrates the heroic defence of the Slavic people over those who would exterminate or enslave them and steal their property. Victory Day is now known as "Memorial Day" when fascism was defeated. Germans celebrate it as their liberation from Nazism.
In Canada, Victory Day, known as "V-E Day", is commemorated with a "long weekend". Canadians reserve November 11th for their big military festival. Americans celebrate Victory Day quietly too, reserving their May military event for Memorial Day on 28 May.
Sadly, these days in Canada and the United States have been appropriated by the warmongers and war profiteers. Canadians wear red poppies and recite "Lest We Forget" a poem that was written in World War I by a Canadian. Originally called "Armistice Day", November 11th is now called "Remembrance Day".
Too bad everyone has forgotten what they were supposed to remember. Everyone forgot the Germans laid down their arms in 1918 because they had expected an armistice. When the German regime of Kaiser Willhelm II immediately collapsed and the Kaiser fled to Holland, the Allies treated the Germans at Versailles as if they had surrendered unconditionally. "Unconditional Surrender" is an American hallmark, but France and Great Britain are blamed for the rapacious treaty Germany was forced to sign. Woodrow Wilson, Lloyd George, and Clemenceau set the stage for World War II.
Some people have very short memories. The Russians paid the price in 1917. They paid the price between 1917 and 1921. They paid the price between 1921 and 1941. They paid the price between 1941 and 1945. They paid the price between 1945 and 1991. Russians know all about war and suffering. Russians remember.
Washington doesn't remember anything because they believe their own bullshit in Washington. They are busy trying to start World War III. If they succeed, they will end all life on earth. Before they die, Americans will blame someone else and feel justified.

May 06, 2017 "Information Clearing House" - A reader asked why neoconservatives push toward nuclear war when there can be no winners. If all die, what is the point?
The answer is that the neoconservatives believe that the US can win at a minimum and perhaps zero damage.
Their insane plan is as follows: Washington will surround Russia and China with anti-ballistic missile bases in order to provide a shield against a retaliatory strike from Russia and China. Moreover, these US anti-ABM bases also can deploy nuclear attack missiles unknown to Russia and China, thus reducing the warning time to five minutes, leaving Washington’s victims little or no time in which to make a decision.
The neoconservatives think that Washington’s first strike will so badly damage the Russian and Chinese retaliatory capabilities that both governments will surrender rather than launch a response. The Russian and Chinese leaderships would conclude that their diminished forces leave little chance that many of their ICBMs will be able to get past Washington’s ABM shield, leaving the US largely intact. A feeble retaliation by Russia and China would simply invite a second wave US nuclear attack that would obliterate Russian and Chinese cities, killing millions and leaving both countries in ruins.
In short, the American warmongers are betting that the Russian and Chinese leaderships would submit rather than risk total destruction.
There is no question that neoconservatives are sufficiently evil to launch a preemptive nuclear attack, but possibly the plan aims to put Russia and China into a situation in which their leaders conclude that the deck is stacked against them and, therefore, they must accept Washington’s hegemony.

Margaret Griffis has been publishing her column every month for years. She keeps a conscientious record. To those who dismiss these statistics with, “So what? They have been killing each other for centuries.” I say this:
All the people in the Middle East, the Levant and Mesopotamia, lived together, peacefully, for over 700 years under the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan, in Istanbul, who was a Sunni, presided over everything. All flavours of Islam lived together, Sunni, Shia, Druze, Alawites. Jews and Christians lived with them too. They respected and protected each other. That's what civilised people do. They inter-married. Numerous tribes coexisted. Egypt was part of the Ottoman Empire. In the Arabian peninsula, the borders of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf were part of the Ottoman Empire. The sand pile that is Saudi Arabia today was not. The ancient kingdom of Persia was established by Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE. Today it is called Iran. While Persia had known oil resources in ancient times, the oil in Saudi Arabia began to be developed in 1950! The Saudis, who had nothing before oil, are like the Beverly Hillbillies, but they are not as funny, or as wise, as Uncle Jed and Granny. Mecca and Medina are in the green strip along the Red Sea.
Trade from China and India to Europe travelled on the Silk Road, through the Black Sea, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, into the Mediterranean and on to Italy and Europe. Istanbul collected tariffs on this lucrative traffic. When Istanbul was called Constantinople, the Christian Emperor did the same. Not incidentally, the home of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople (who is first among equals in the Orthodox Catholic Christian Church) is Istanbul. That fact tells everyone how Muslims treat other religions. Constantinople fell to the Ottomans in 1453. At the other end of the Mediterranean, at about the same time (1492), the Spanish Inquisition was implemented to purge non-Christians. It was ended by royal decree in 1834.
While no empire lasts forever, the unmitigated disaster that has befallen the people in the Middle East can be directly traced to World War I and World War II. The British era was not quite as bad as the American era which began with Saudi oil and the rise of American hegemony after WW II. The Zionist project in the State that calls itself “Israel” has always been bad for everyone, notably for the indigenous Jews who were driven out of their ancestral homes throughout the Middle East by Zionist terrorism.
The current bloodbath began with the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City in 2001 and with the George W. Bush Presidency. "9/11" was an inside job. It was a false flag attack used to launch the insane neoconservative Project for the New American Century (PNAC). The lunatics are running the asylum. What a century they have planned for us!
What can be done? We can look in the mirror. We can say a prayer.
