The new Vietnam documentary

At the beginning of Ken Burns’ new documentary on the American war in Vietnam, the narrator says the war “was begun in good faith by decent people out of fateful misunderstandings, American overconfidence and Cold War misunderstandings.”

The early American involvement in Vietnam can be marked by two things in particular: (1) helping the French imperialists in their fight against the forces led by Ho Chi Minh of North Vietnam and (2) the cancellation of the elections that would have united North and South Vietnam as one nation because the US and its South Vietnam allies knew that Ho Chi Minh would win. It was that simple.

[So much for Washington's devotion to freedom and democracy. If 'duhmockricy' doesn't produce what Washington wants, regime change is required to install a government Washington does like. - ed]

Nothing of good faith or decency in that scenario. No misunderstandings. Ho Chi Minh was a great admirer of America and its Declaration of Independence. His own actual declaration of 1945 begins with the familiar “All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” But Ho Chi Minh was what was called a “communist”. It was that simple. NORTH KOREAN FOREIGN MINISTER RI YONG HO is addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York Saturday, after a week of fiery barbs traded between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has stoked tensions over North Korea's nuclear program.

Moments before Ri was set to speak, U.S. Air Force bombers flew in international airspace east of North Korea. The Pentagon said it's the furthest north any U.S. fighters have flown in the 21st Century. 

The speech comes after Ri threatened to test a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific, and Mr Trump issued an executive order targeting countries that trade with North Korea. At a Friday night rally for Republican U.S. Senate contender Luther Strange in Alabama, Mr Trump derided "little rocket man" — his new favourite term for Kim — and emphasized that North Korea would be dealt with. Earlier in the day, the president tweeted that he, Kim, is a "madman" who will be "tested like never before." In Mr Trump's speech to the U.N. this week, the president said he would "totally destroy" North Korea if the U.S. is "forced to defend itself" or any allies.

Kim, in a rare statement earlier this week, called the president "mentally deranged" and a "dotard," pledging to strike as needed.

"Whatever Trump might have expected, he will face results beyond his expectation," Kim said in the statement. "I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged U.S. dotard with fire."

GRAND STRATEGY II

I AM REASSURED (SOMEWHAT) that we probably will not all die in a World War. The United States has never launched a war with anyone of equal strength. When great powers have been involved, the United States has always played one against the other. Then, when one side or the other has nearly won a victory, the United States has stepped in, claimed the victory and taken all the loot and all the glory. 

This was certainly the case in both World Wars I and II. The American War of Independence was won for Washington, the man, by France. Before that Washington used Great Britain to defeat France and the Indians! The American Civil War was won by Washington, DC, and not by the North as everyone has been taught. All Americans lost the Civil War, both South and North. Power was centralized in Washington. The constitution the states had ratified was over-written. The United States of America became the garrison state devoted to war that it is now. Today's military-industrial complex was born. President Ulysses S. Grant coined the term "lobbyist" for the industrialists who he watched bribing Congressmen in the lobby of the Willard Hotel in Washington. President Grant was powerless to stop it.

All the other wars were significant mismatches with the big bully usually beating up the little guy. The western American Indians were destroyed by the Seventh Cavalry. The eastern, southern and midwestern Indians had already been crushed. Before the Civil War, the Mexicans lost half their country in the war which the United States had engineered (1846-48). Washington launched its world-wide empire with the Spanish-American War. Vigorous American heroes smacked down the decrepit Spanish Empire. But the bully didn't always win. The mighty U.S.A. hasn't won a war since 1945. Nevertheless, Washington has always declared victory anyway along with proud clarions broadcast about how it had saved the world at great cost to itself. That's what it did after Korea and Vietnam. Hollywood makes movies. TV and print news blankets the world. Academics write books. Deep State actors — war contractors, the military and intelligence community, Wall Street, the banks too big to fail, the bureaucracy, and the Democratic and Republican establishments —  who really run things are engorged.

Burp.

Everyone always believes them! The losers are always happy to support the next American wars as Japan and Germany have been doing since 1945. American propaganda is splendid! Everyone wants to fight for freedom and duhmockrisy.

The former world hegemon that had been enthroned for centuries, the British Empire, was destroyed by World Wars I and II even though the British thought they had won both. Some still do. Their champion, Winston Churchill, was considered to be a 'drunken bum' by his ally and supposed friend, FDR. An alcoholic Churchill led the British Empire to its grave. Read David Irving. The British were the big losers of the 20th century, completing what began in 1776. Great Britain's end began with the War of 1812 — which had no clear winner — but Great Britain did acquire a treacherous back-stabbing ally when the two decided to kiss and make up. British people still think the U.S.A. is their best friend! "Americans saved us from Hitler and Russia," they sigh gratefully. The Royal Navy decorated Admiral Ernest J. King who hated the British, and most particularly, hated the Royal Navy! 

Level heads rule in Russia and China today. Crazy people rule in Washington. They are led by their blow-hard puppet, known to his enemies as Agent Orange. The neocons who control Washington could ignite the powder keg we live in. The neocons are smoking crack and playing with matches.

KEN BURNS' DOCUMENTARY, the Vietnam War, tells viewers the war was a tragedy. It was a mistake, he says. That is Burns' theme. Ngo Dinh Diem, his brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu and his sister-in-law, known as the heartless Madam Nhu were evil people who exploited the South Vietnamese people, Burns tells us. Was it a mistake? From 1945 onward, the United States of America has always installed and supported people exactly like Diem. There have been dozens of them all around the world. Read historian William Blum for a detailed chronicle. The United States has been a dirty dealer throughout its life. Here are a few examples.

The Shah of Iran (1953) was installed after Mohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown by a coup that was personally organised by Kermit Roosevelt, the grandson of President Theodor Roosevelt (R). The Somoza dynasty ruled Nicaragua from 1927 to 1979. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (D) was told that Somoza was a son of a bitch, the President replied, "Yes, but he's our son of a bitch." The Republic of China was led by Chiang Kai-shek 1928-1975. He was driven from the mainland by Mao in 1949. Syngman Rhee was America's strongman in Korea when the Korean War began in 1950. The Zionist entity that dares to call itself "Israel" has had unequivocal U.S. support since 1948. Fast forwarding to the present, Petro Poroshenko and the Ukrainian Nazis now rule the Ukraine after a CIA coup d'état ousted democratically-elected Viktor Yanukovych in 2014. Georgia preceded Ukraine. They are part of the United States' on-going war on Russia.

The Vietnam debacle was business as usual.

The Killing of History

I watched the first episode in New York. It leaves you in no doubt of its intentions right from the start. The narrator says the war “was begun in good faith by decent people out of fateful misunderstandings, American overconfidence and Cold War misunderstandings”.

The dishonesty of this statement is not surprising. The cynical fabrication of “false flags” that led to the invasion of Vietnam is a matter of record – the Gulf of Tonkin “incident” in 1964, which Burns promotes as true, was just one. The lies litter a multitude of official documents, notably the Pentagon Papers, which the great whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg released in 1971.

There was no good faith. The faith was rotten and cancerous. For me — as it must be for many Americans — it is difficult to watch the film’s jumble of “red peril” maps, unexplained interviewees, ineptly cut archive and maudlin American battlefield sequences.

In the series’ press release in Britain — the BBC will show it — there is no mention of Vietnamese dead, only Americans. “We are all searching for some meaning in this terrible tragedy,” Novick is quoted as saying.  How very post-modern.

All this will be familiar to those who have observed how the American media and popular culture behemoth has revised and served up the great crime of the second half of the twentieth century: from The Green Berets and The Deer Hunter to Rambo and, in so doing, has legitimised subsequent wars of aggression.  The revisionism never stops, and the blood never dries. The invader is pitied and purged of guilt, while “searching for some meaning in this terrible tragedy”. Cue Bob Dylan: “Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?” [With God On Our Side]

I thought about the “decency” and “good faith” when recalling my own first experiences as a young reporter in Vietnam: watching hypnotically as the skin fell off Napalmed peasant children like old parchment and the ladders of bombs that left trees petrified and festooned with human flesh. General William Westmoreland, the American commander, referred to people as “termites”.

ANYONE WATCHING this documentary can see that what is happening today has happened before — just the other day, in fact. Perhaps, most cannot see. When one doesn't know where one is going, JUST STOP. Of course, the leaders always think they know where they are going. The rest do what they are told.

It’s essential to identify the conditions attached to this Mafia-style “loan.” Nothing remotely similar to reviving the Ukrainian economy is in play. The scheme is inextricably linked to the IMF’s notorious, one-size-fits-all “structural adjustment” policy, known to hundreds of millions from Latin America and Southeast Asia to Southern Europe. The regime changers in Kiev have duly complied, launching the inevitable austerity package – from tax hikes and frozen pensions to a stiff, over 50 percent rise in the price of natural gas heating Ukrainian homes. The “Ukrainian people” won’t be able to pay their utility bills this coming winter.
