This link confirms what I was saying yesterday. The ancestors of these Syrians — Shia, Sunni, Alawi, Druze, various Christian sects and ancient Jewish populations — lived together more-or-less at peace with each other for over 600 years when Syria was part of the Ottoman Empire. That all changed, somehow, after the Ottoman Empire was defeated in WW I and Great Britain and the victors took over. Mesopotamia is exactly the same. India is similar. There, the British East India Company and then — after the Sepoy Mutiny — the British Empire were past masters at fomenting strife between Muslims and Hindus and playing one side off against the other. "Create conflict and step in to restore order," was the British colonial policy. The American Empire is the British Empire. It is the same Empire with different people running the show.
