1955 Jaguar D-Type Le Mans
Il Commendatore thought this was the most beautiful car ever made.
Enzo knew cars.
The D-Type's aerodynamic superiority is evident from its maximum speed of 172.8 mph on the Mulsanne Straight compared with the 4.9-litre Ferrari's 160.1 mph. Three weeks later the D Type won the Rheims 12 hour endurance race.
The goal of current aerodynamics is to produce downforce to keep a car on the track. Beautiful voluptuous curves have been sacrificed for safety and increased speed. - ed
Conclusion of the 1955 Le Mans race
Mike Hawthorn and the Jaguar team kept racing [after the disastrous collision]. With the Mercedes-Benz team withdrawn and the Ferraris all broken, Jaguar's main competition had gone. Hawthorn and Bueb won the race by an easy margin of five laps ahead of Aston Martin.
