The best, the very best.
"The greatest sports racing car ever built — really an unbelievable machine."
Stirling Moss
Hall of Fame Formula One driver and former Mercedes-Benz team 300 SLR race driver
Maximum speed approaching 290 km/h (180 mph), the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé easily earned the reputation of being the era's fastest road car. Today's top cars, BMW and Toyota, can reach 230 mph on the Mulsanne Straight.
"The fastest top speed recorded at Le Mans is 405 kph (252 mph). This was in 1988 by Roger Dorchy in a WM Peugeot P88. The record was set on the Hunaudieres straight on the section after the Nissan chicane. " (The chicanes were built in 1990.) This car was prepared to set the record. It was not raced. Racing is left to the big dogs.
Le Mans is not won by speed alone. Driver endurance and automobile durability are also required. - ed
