HANG IN CHAINS

© MMCXIX V.1.0.0
by Morley Evans

A sentence to hang in chains should be so feared that it would deter crimes that ended with this sentence. What does it mean?

A gibbet /ˈdʒɪbɪt/ is any instrument of public execution (including guillotine, executioner's block, impalement stake, hanging gallows, or related scaffold), but gibbeting refers to the use of a gallows-type structure from which the dead or dying bodies of criminals were hung on public display to deter other crimes.

The picture shows Captain Kidd hanging in chains. We don't know if he was alive or dead when he was hung up. His body would have been left to rot; The horror would have been witnessed — and smelled — by ordinary people. Heads of States have been gibbeted. Royalists exhumed and gibbeted Oliver Cromwell when Charles II restored the British monarchies in 1660. Imagine Elliot Abrams or 'Uncle Dick' hanging in chains. John Bolton and his moustache could smile down from the gibbet. Piracy is a grave crime. Mass murder and colossal theft are much worse. Many people would like to see Hillary or 'The Donald' in chains. I would nominate some doctors. Benjamin Netanyahu should get what he deserves. Politicians who abuse the power of the State always commit the worst felonies. The jails are filled with penny-ante criminals. Serious crimes cannot be excused or tolerated.
