PREDATOR

© MMXIX V.1.0.0
by Morley Evans

A minigun is chambered for 7.62x51 NATO. Each cartridge weighs 0.853oz. The rate of fire is 6000 rounds per minute. In the "contact" scene of Predator (1987) Mac (Bill Duke) fires the minigun continuously for exactly 44 seconds, discharging 4400 rounds of ammunition at which point the weapon cycles but ceases to fire. That means that Blain (Jesse Ventura) was carrying 234.575 lbs of ammo in his pack. The minigun itself weighs 85lbs for a combined weight of 319.575 lbs. Miniguns are electrically operated and would also require a massive battery (likely in excess of 100 lbs) and produce as much force when fired as 50-60 high powered rifles. What does this mean?

It means that in Hollywood weapons never run out of ammo unless the screenwriter says they do. In real life, they do run out of ammo, of course. Not only does the minigun run out of ammo, but it also will run out of electricity. So after an impressive burst, automatic weapons stop working. When you are out of ammo, you are out of luck. The predator was not killed. Otherwise, the movie would have been over before it began. Recoil is another matter.

How much does it cost to shoot a minigun for 12 seconds?

"The Heavy" claims that it costs 400,000 dollars to fire the Minigun for twelve seconds, presumably not counting the spin-up time. At the claimed 10,000 rounds per minute, the cost of each bullet would be $200. Jul 7, 2019

It is impressive, you must admit.
