Last night, I watched, for the umpteenth time, The Manchurian Candidate (1962) with Lawrence Harvey, Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury. I never get tired of it. I always look forward to seeing Lawrence Harvey dispatch his tormentors, especially "that idiot" his step-father Senator Johnny What's-His-Name. The opening scenes are dark and confused, just like things really were in 1950, only a few years after The Great Victory of '45. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) is so very different from all those great WW II movies, then and now. We were the good guys. We knew who were the bad guys. We had on our side Van Johnson, Bing and Bob, the Andrews Sisters, James Stewart, James Cagney and Gary Cooper. Let's not forget "Duke" Wayne. Winston and FDR were our leaders. Chiang Kai-shek and Stalin were our friends. We nobly fought evil — and won! The world was so different then. Or maybe we only thought things were different and made sense before 1950.
Perhaps things didn't make sense then. Perhaps what we were told and what we believed was a lie. Perhaps we keep telling ourselves these lies over-and-over so we won't ever have to examine them. I found very disturbing Mr. Nowiki's "We Are All Basterds Now". Maybe we have been basterds [sic] all along, but we were afraid to look in the mirror. That is frightening.
Maybe we are, all of us, like Lawrence Harvey and Frank Sinatra. Maybe we have all been programmed — not so much by their leaders but by our own leaders — to do evil. What do you think we are doing today?

A Personal Best
© MMIX V.1.0.8
In June 2000, I was in a coma. That was the lowest point in my life. I have been slowly improving since then. It took two years before I could do much of anything but sit in a La-Z-Boy chair all day long. That's where I had spent most of my days for eight years before that. A year ago, I no longer suffered from transient chronic pain in my muscles and joints. Then, I added lifting dumb bells to the stretching program I had been doing three times a week for years. I started with 10 pound dumb bells, one set, 10 reps. I did bench press, flies, biceps, triceps and rows.
For the last six months, at Gold's Gym, my personal trainer has worked with me every Wednesday for an hour. Her name is Kristen. She is a 20- year-old power lifter! She is on the Canadian team. Usually she has me doing things I wouldn't otherwise do: balance exercises, squats, walking. We are retraining my brain. I like to do upper body weights. Today, I bench pressed 40 pound dumb bells six times! Here's what I did today: 5 minute walk from 2.3 to 2.6; stretches (my standard routine); bench press (1 set of 15 reps with 25 pounds, 1 set of 15 reps with 30 pounds, 1 set of 15 reps with 35 pounds, 1 set of 6 reps with 40 pounds) A PERSONAL BEST!!; one arm rows (3 sets 15 reps 30 pounds); flies (3 sets of 15 reps - 20 pounds); triceps pull downs (3 sets of 15 reps 40 pounds); biceps curl 1 set of 15 reps with 15 pounds; shower when I got home. I did no lower body exercises, but I pressed 40 pound dumb bells 6 times after warming up with smaller weights for a total of 51 reps. I controlled the 40 pounders very well.
If I sometimes seem "over-the-top" happy, it is because I was once severely crippled. I was much older than a centenarian. All I could do all day was sit in a chair. I slept fitfully with night sweats. My hands were frozen painful claws. I was in extreme pain 24 hours a day — for years. Everything hurt. I was a mass of throbbing aching pain. My feet felt as if they were on fire. They felt as if they were burning coals. Then, I was dead. Now, I am young again. Best of all, pretty girls smile at me! I am like the Bible's Job. Not only am I young again, I am healthier than I was when I was young. Pretty girls didn't smile at me then but they do now. Maybe I am dead and I am in heaven.
I am very thankful. Of course this isn't heaven. Some of Regina's leading citizens, and one in Wakaw, are responsible for the good done to me and some of Regina's leading citizens are responsible for the evil that was done to me. None are responsible for the pretty girls or for my deliverance.
And some people say there is no God.

Backing Up Your Computer
© MMIX V.1.0.3
Is your computer backed up? Here's what I do. I have not lost even one file in 30 years of computing. I have always used Apple computers. I have been using Macintosh computers since 1985. Today, I have a 24" iMac with 2.66 GHz Intel Core2 Dual processor and a 4 GB memory.
The mainstay of my back up system today is Carbon Copy Cloner©. You can get yours here: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
Carbon Copy Cloner© is donation ware. You can use it for free but you are urged to donate if you find it useful.
Carbon Copy Cloner© (CCC) will Save Your Bacon. Please donate.
CCC will make a complete, identical, clone of your hard drive that will be bootable. Set it up and forget it. Mine makes an incremental clone every night while I sleep. It takes about 20 minutes to incrementally back up over two million files on my hard drive (everything: preferences, settings, documents, applications). I have used it many times to replace my entire drive which has occasionally been neccessary. It is perfect. I can't recommend Mike Bombich and his elves highly enough. They helped me!
CCC took an hour to back up 23 GB the night after I installed Snow Leopard. Upgrading from Leopard changed many files!
I use both Time Machine® and Carbon Copy Cloner©. Each resides on its own LaCie external hard drive. Each is essential. They do different things in different ways. I also use iDisk to back up documents onto The Cloud: in case my office is wiped out, my documents will survive on a remote server, somewhere. I'll be able to find them if I survive.
I have another external LaCie drive for TechTool's eDrive which keeps everything running in tiptop condition.
I am backed up. Are you?

America VS the United States

RE: The 'Good War' — Raimondo
The Editor,
Although I agree with most things on AntiWar.com, I must disagree with this:
The "Good War," in short, was the launching pad for the American Imperium, and ever since we’ve been marauding all over the world, likening our foes to Hitler, and building up a mighty apparatus of mass murder answerable to no one and nothing – certainly not to the American people.
If criticizing "The Good War" (WW II) is unwise, then criticizing the idea that the United States only recently turned bad is impossibly risky. But I want you to consider that the United States did not turn bad only recently, anyway. Peel the onion. Go back. Go all the way back. You will find the folks in Washington have always been doing what George W. Bush did and what Obama is still doing. That includes all the Presidents, even Jimmy Carter, who actually became good only after he left office. Even the Gipper was bad and I liked him (read Chomsky). Even Kennedy was bad and I liked him too (read Chomsky). Lyndon Johnson was bad, but he wasn't unusual. How about Truman? And FDR? And Wilson? And TR? And McKinley? And Lincoln? And Polk? And Andrew Jackson? You can go all the way back to George Washington and the Whiskey Rebellion and even look closely at what the Thirteen Colonies were doing before 1776. How did they treat the Indians? Abominably. Everyone knows about black slaves. Were there any white slaves? Yes, there were! Who was Napoleon's only ally? Why, it was the United States whose very first overseas mission was to crush the slave rebellion in Haiti and establish a naval base in Guantanamo. The base is still there! The United States Congress declared war on the Barbary Pirates. Why? So it could justify raising the money necessary to build a navy. The arguments then would be familiar to anyone today: they were righting wrongs, defending women and children etc., etc.
Americans have always been conned (not merely Indians, blacks and Mexicans, but most whites too): They have been unwitting dupes who thought they were spreading wholesome values, civilization, freedom, democracy, and human rights while they have actually been enhancing power in Washington. Take a close look at the history of Texas. Look at Mexico. Even Canada has been invaded several times. Review the history of Guatemala (United Fruit Company bananas) and Hawaii (Dole pineapple). Let's not forget the Philippines. Democracy, human rights and U.S. business, which is labelled "free enterprise", have always been spread at gun point. Americans have always been fascinated with munitions and history's bloodiest epoch, the 20th Century, was the American Century, actually, it was the U.S. Century.
One of the fundamental errors upon which the United States is founded is this: "Peace Through Strength." It is a formula for exactly what we have had, what we have now and where we are headed. The United States has always been an empire. The United States has always aspired to be an empire. The United States has always been driven to be the only empire. The United States government has always worked closely with the military and Big Business — the pattern for both Mussolini and Lenin was established by the United States, which the Ayatollah Khomeini called 'The Great Satin'! Of course we don't care what he said. He was just another Hitler. Khomeini took Iranian oil out of our hands!
"Don't bother us now, you peacenik, we're getting ready to bomb Iran into the stone age so we can save the world from terrorists."

NOTE:
This is what P.M. Steven Harper and his idiot Conservatives have committed Canada to support. Perhaps this is the traditional role of Conservatives in Canada: When it became clear to Paul Martin that Harper and his Tories were going to defeat Martin and the Liberals, Martin castigated Harper for selling out to Washington. It was the Liberals who have kept the Americans out of Canada and who have always been dedicated to Canadian independence, Martin whined. I have always been a Conservative supporter. I guess I was wrong. I won't vote Conservative again. I may never vote again. Duh-MOCK-ricy?

9/11
© MMIX v.1.0.8
The official explanation has only one thing going for it: it is the official explanation of the officials. Otherwise, it has nothing going for it. It is a pack of lies. Something else happened.
Consider these points (that means think about them):
• the same organizations did "9/11" that assassinated JFK: elements inside the U.S. military, inside U.S. intelligence, and inside the U.S. government, particularly inside the White House
• the Israelis helped. The Israelis are always helpful. Some of them think they run the Empire because their lobby, AIPAC, owns America's elected officials, with but few exceptions
• there were no Arabs
• no planes crashed into buildings in New York City and Washington, DC
• United Airlines Flight 93 did not crash in a field in Pennsylvania.
• all four planes were hijacked electronically and flown out over the Atlantic where they were detonated
• some explosives were used to enhance "special effects" for the TV shows which millions watched over and over and over
• people running for their lives may have been there, but they would have been too busy to be reliable witnesses of what was going on. They were running for their lives. They were pumped full of panic adrenalin
• eye-witnesses could not see the big picture. TV viewers saw what they were supposed to see and were told what to think
• various "man in the street" video footage was set up for the special effects department to doctor and feed to the TV networks
• Ted Olson, the U.S. Solicitor General, did not talk on a cell phone to his wife, Barbara, before she met her doom at the Pentagon
• the "plane crash" at the Pentagon was a shaped charge placed against the wall of the building (inside). Assorted airplane parts in the "crash area" inside the building were planted there before the incident. None of them match the plane that supposedly was involved
• the lawn outside the Pentagon was as perfect as a putting green — after the "crash", then it was covered with sand and fire-fighting equipment
• symbolically, a giant U.S. flag was hung over the collapsed area of the Pentagon to demonstrate patriotism and to conceal from TV audiences what had happened — but early photographs were already on the Internet for all to see
• no plane could get through the tiny hole in the Pentagon wall. A missile was unnecessary when a bomb would do the job
• private video surveillance footage showing the Pentagon was confiscated by intelligence agents and never seen again
• the Pentagon area that was "attacked" was vacant and being renovated. There was lots of time to set things up without being disturbed
• three pineapple-sized 4th generation tritium bombs with vertical foci were set up in the basements to vaporize WTC 1, 2 and 7 — more than 85% of these huge buildings simply floated off on the breezes to settle all over Lower Manhattan
• photographs and videos confirm that a very powerful focused explosive event destroyed WTC 1 and another destroyed WTC 2
• WTC 7, which had been especially reinforced during construction, collapsed identically to WTC 1 and 2 as it was vaporized —most of WTC 7 vanished with its collapse too
• seismic recorders confirm earth-shaking disturbances in the area at the time
• pools of molten steel were discovered in the sub-basements of the WTC buildings weeks after 9/11
• the WTC buildings were stuffed with asbestos which had to be removed by public health order
• Larry Silverstein, the new owner of the WTC (which had been "privatized" and taken out of the hands of the Port Authority), saved the cost of renovation or demolition and removal of his WTC buildings while collecting a huge insurance payoff
• George W. Bush's brother, Marvin, was in charge of WTC security before 9/11 — "security officers" had access to everything
• most of the WTC workers weren't working that day, Tuesday 11 September 2001 although it was a regular business day
• the WTC crime scene was destroyed before it could be examined. The evidence was shipped off to places in India and Africa where it was melted down as scrap metal
• the Pentagon crime scene was destroyed by the direct order of Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense. The fire there burned for days and days. Why, as fires go, it wasn't a very big fire?
• very large numbers of WTC first responders are dying or have already died of lung cancer caused by radiation
• the masterminds behind "9/11" were George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney who are recommended to us as the prime suspects by their other crimes and by the indubitable fact that they are the only ones who could have done what was done. There are no other suspects — certainly not "the usual suspects"
• the motive was to keep the U.S. Empire in business: A new enemy had to be found to replace the Soviet Union. The Russians were not going to play this stupid game any longer — they had run outta money
• War has always been "The Health of the State." Governments love war, especially the U.S. government
• Pearl Harbor worked so well the last time. It kept everything going for over 60 years.
Bin Laden died years ago. The CIA stopped looking for him years ago. There is no "Al Qaeda". The shadow war that George W. Bush told us would be waged forever was made up by the buffoons in Washington for the bozos on Main Street.
These people pose a real and present danger to everyone world-wide. The only way to get rid of them is to stop giving them money. The world-wide financial meltdown and globalization are looking after that for us — I hope. Washington, like the Soviet Union, has run outta money. I'm going to bed. Good night.
The official explanation has only one thing going for it: it is the official explanation of the officials. Otherwise, it has nothing going for it. It is a pack of lies. Something else happened.

Good night.

Pfizer in the NEWS
© MMIX v.1.0.1
No, it is not my imagination. No, I am not crazy. Established medicine is corrupt through and through. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer must pay a 2.3 BILLION dollar fine for marketing fraud. Of course that judgement came in the United States. Nothing like that would ever happen in Canada, not because Canadians are lily white (which Canadians think) but because the Canadian medico-legal system is a Mickey Mouse Club that never finds the establishment guilty of anything. We can expect things to be much worse in Canada than they are in the United States. Still, the clock has just moved another minute closer to The Hour of Doom for established medicine and the crooks who protect it.
Pfizer shamed with $2.3bn fine for marketing fraud
Thursday , September 03, 2009
The US government has imposed a $2.3 billion fine on Pfizer for a string of offences including illegal off-label prescribing and bribery of officials.
The fine represents the country's biggest ever fraud settlement against a pharmaceutical company, and covers criminal and civil charges.
The US Department of Justice announced the deal which would resolve criminal and civil liability linked to Pfizer's illegal off-label marketing of its painkiller Bextra for several uses and doses that the FDA had specifically declined to approve due to safety concerns.
Launched in 2002, Bextra was withdrawn just three years later in April 2005, after the FDA concluded its risks outweighed its benefits.
Pfizer pleaded guilty to the charges, and will pay a fine of $1.195 billion, the largest criminal fine ever imposed in the US for any matter. The company's subsidiary Pharmacia & Upjohn will also forfeit $105 million, for a total criminal resolution of $1.3 billion.
Pfizer has also agreed to pay $1 billion to resolve allegations under the civil False Claims Act that the company illegally promoted four drugs - Bextra; Geodon, an anti-psychotic drug; antibiotic Zyvox, an antibiotic and epilepsy treatment Lyrica.
The deal also settles allegations that Pfizer caused false claims to be submitted to government health care programmes for unlicensed indications, and which were therefore not covered by those insurance schemes.
The civil settlement also resolves allegations that Pfizer paid bribes to health care professionals to induce them to prescribe these and other drugs. The civil settlement will be divided between the federal government, to receive over $668.5 million, and the state Medicaid system, which receives $331.4 million.
Pfizer also has agreed to take part in a large scale 'corporate integrity agreement' with the Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services. This means procedures and reviews will be put in place to avoid and promptly detect similar transgressions taking place.
The US authorities were alerted to the wrongdoing by whistleblowers. As part of the deal, six whistleblowers will receive payments worth more than $102 million, taken from the government's share of the settlement.
A victory for government agencies
The investigation involved many different federal and state bodies working together, and they have not stinted in underlining their victory.
"Today's landmark settlement is an example of the Department of Justice's ongoing and intensive efforts to protect the American public and recover funds for the federal treasury and the public from those who seek to earn a profit through fraud. It shows one of the many ways in which federal government, in partnership with its state and local allies, can help the American people at a time when budgets are tight and health care costs are increasing," said Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli.
"This historic settlement will return nearly $1 billion to Medicare, Medicaid, and other government insurance programs, securing their future for the Americans who depend on these programs," said Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Department of Health and Human Services. "The Department of Health and Human Services will continue to seek opportunities to work with its government partners to prosecute fraud wherever we can find it. But we will also look for new ways to prevent fraud before it happens. Health care is too important to let a single dollar go to waste."
"Illegal conduct and fraud by pharmaceutical companies puts the public health at risk, corrupts medical decisions by health care providers, and costs the government billions of dollars," said Tony West, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division. "This civil settlement and plea agreement by Pfizer represent yet another example of what penalties will be faced when a pharmaceutical company puts profits ahead of patient welfare."
"The size and seriousness of this resolution, including the huge criminal fine of $1.3 billion, reflect the seriousness and scope of Pfizer's crimes," said Mike Loucks, acting US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. "Pfizer violated the law over an extensive time period. Furthermore, at the very same time Pfizer was in our office negotiating and resolving the allegations of criminal conduct by its then newly-acquired subsidiary, Warner-Lambert, Pfizer was itself in its other operations violating those very same laws. Today's enormous fine demonstrates that such blatant and continued disregard of the law will not be tolerated."
"This resolution protects the FDA in its vital mission of ensuring that drugs are safe and effective. When manufacturers undermine the FDA's rules, they interfere with a doctor's judgment and can put patient health at risk," commented Michael Levy, US Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. "The public trusts companies to market their drugs for uses that FDA has approved, and trusts that doctors are using independent judgment. Federal health dollars should only be spent on treatment decisions untainted by misinformation from manufacturers concerned with the bottom line."
The corporate integrity agreement requires senior Pfizer executives and board members to complete annual compliance certifications and opens Pfizer to more public scrutiny by requiring it to make detailed disclosures on its website.
Pfizer had already anticipated the fines in its last quarterly results of 2008. As a result of setting aside money for the fine, the company's profits for the three month period dropped 90% to $268 million.
Sales managers sentenced
The only individuals to be prosecuted for the offences are two former regional sales managers at Pfizer, Thomas Farina and Mary Holloway.
Holloway, based in New Jersey, was fined $75,000 and received a two year probation period, while Farina, a New York regional manager, was sentenced to home confinement and electronic monitoring for six months, and will serve a three year-probation period.
Farina was given his confinement sentence because he had tried to conceal his actions once an investigation was launched, including deleting and falsely backdating computer records.
Holloway claimed that her actions had been supported by managers and other colleagues in the company, and produced some evidence in her trial to back up her claims.
Whether or not Holloway was singled-out from a more widespread culture of off-label promotion looks unlikely to be established, but Pfizer must now face greater external scrutiny.
Amy Schulman, the company's general counsel, commented: "We regret certain actions taken in the past, but are proud of the action we've taken to strengthen our internal controls and pioneer new procedures so that we not only comply with state and federal laws, but also meet the high standards that patients, physicians and the public expect from a leading worldwide company dedicated to healing and better health.
She concluded: "Corporate integrity is an absolute priority for Pfizer, and we will continue to take appropriate actions to further enhance our compliance practices and strengthen public trust in our company."
Pfizer now has a dedicated chief compliance officer, a code of conduct and extensive compliance training for it staff. The company will now also ask an 'independent review organisation' to help it assess how its 'promotional and product-related' departments are run.
