Downton Abby
Downton Abbey, the brilliant British miniseries, broadcast in North America by PBS Masterpiece Theatre, encapsulates the transition of world hegemony from the British Empire — that had ruled the roost since the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) — to the empire of the United States of America which may be gasping its last as 2012 comes to an end. Stay tuned to this essay as it will be expanded.

History never actually begins and ends. History is an ongoing play with millions of actors and thousands of subplots. Human action is far more complicated and interesting than any work of fiction. An understanding of history makes a work of fiction like Downton Abbey come alive. The author of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, has a broad understanding of history, himself, as well as a keen understanding of people, making Downton Abbey fascinating and popular.
