Ethics

I have difficulty understanding the Christian doctrine of forgiveness that I hear in church. Is the doctrine a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card? Do scofflaws walk? Perhaps not. W.C. Fields, when asked on his deathbed why he was reading the Bible, answered, "Looking for loopholes."

Jesus tells us: For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:20

Christians and other God-fearing people who include Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, Confucians and Taoists, are supposed to follow the Big Three. Do not lie; Do not steal; Do not kill. These are universal. They are the foundation of civilization. They are universal because civilization works. Human societies whose people follow the rules survive. Societies which have not followed the rules, have joined Ozymandias king of kings. They have blown away with the sands of time.

That will surely be the fate of Washington's empire which is based upon overwhelming firepower, secret intelligence, propaganda, and money — despite its official motto "In God We Trust." Nobody who knows anything, trusts Washington anymore.

The shepherds usually plunder the sheep once they get a taste of power. The more power they get the more god-like the shepherds think they are. The good shepherd protects the sheep from the wolves and searches for any lambs who are lost. A good king does the same. They are few and far between.

Organizations comprised of people who lie, steal and kill, go out of business. People stop buying what they are selling. If no one can believe anyone, an organization cannot function. They suffer the fate of the people building the Tower of Babel. Criminal gangs all have very strict rules of honesty within their ranks. Al Capone offered Melvin Purvis a job after Hoover forced Purvis out of the FBI. Capone told Purvis "My offer is always open. I am always looking for honest men." Capone wasn't joking. Years later, the Mafia refused to deal with Nicolae Ceauşescu because he couldn't be trusted.

Honesty and discipline are the foundation of every military organization. Their business is stealing and killing but they demand what is essential to every organization, criminal or not.

Honesty is the best policy. While honest people seem to be suckers who can be fleeced, there is no alternative to being honest. Bernie Madoff who is serving 300 years for running a Ponzi scheme has denounced the criminality of the United States Treasury and the Federal Reserve System whose crimes are magnitudes of order worse than anything Madoff did.

Individuals should not waste time and energy hating those who have wronged them. A civil society has justice: The shepherds are not allowed to plunder the sheep in a civilized country. The marketplace works when people obey the rules. Marx thought a bureaucracy could replace the marketplace. Marx was wrong about how societies could best earn and distribute wealth. So-called "capitalists" are wrong too. They invariably use the government to fleece the sheep, despoil the earth and amass their fortunes. People who want to improve society must develop charity and justice.

Based upon my personal experience and what I have seen Canadians do to others, I would give Canada a very low grade as a civilized country. Despite Washington's crimes — which are much larger than anything any Canadian has done — some Americans strive to build a just society.

Canadians just don't get it. Canadians are complacent, lazy, and smug. They need a good swift kick in the ass to wake them up. Harsh words are needed. I'll try to find some.
